Osmosis definition

Diffusion of water molecules from dilute to concentrated area across a partially permeable membrane down a concentration gradient

hypotonic solution

solution more dilute than cell
water goes into the cell
red blood cell bursts (lysis)
plant cell goes turgid

hypertonic solution

solution has less water concentration than the cell
water leaves the cell
red blood cell shrivels
plant cell becomes plasmolysed

isotonic solution

solution has the same concentration as cell
water does not move
