What makes ECSE important?
-exist to promote child's learning & development
-Not all children who receive services early will also receive them later
-Helps provide family w/ supports so they can learn about child's disability
-Child Find: mandated by IDEA and includes developmental screenings in communities, schools at state and county fairs

Part C - IDEA
-Eligibility for birth to 3 years old
-Enhance development of infants & toddlers w/ disabilities
-Significant Developmental Delay (SDD): 1.3 standard deviation below mean
-Atypical development: close but NOT eligible under SDD tests; impacts overall development
Part B - IDEA
-Covers ages 3-6 & 6-21
-Before going into Education, system need to reevaluate students
-Individual Family Service Plan[IFSP] transfers to an IEP (@ age 3)
-Present level of Academic and Functional Performance (PLAAFP)

Options w/in Natural Environment (Preschool age)
-combo classes w/ dually certified teacher (ECSE & ECE)
-Head start (ifancy & up) or childcare w/ iterant support from ECSE teacher and OT, PT, SLP as listened on IEP
-Home visits from them make transition into school go smooth
ECSE services outside Natural Environment (Preschool age)
-Self contained ECSE classroom w/ embedded OT/PT/SLP and or pull out services
-Other placements (hospitals, day schools, residential schools)

-parents are partners and play crucial role in assessment
-assessing all of the different areas of development, in school & natural environment
-important to assess in variety of ways
-Earlier/younger they are, it can be difficult to assess because they are constantly developing/changing
Programming for ECSE
-wide range of activities: feeding, range of motion, finger plays, dramatic play, direct instruction, work/activity boxes
-Embedded IEP goals into routines of the day
-Required to provide access to the general curriculum
NAEYC - National Association for the Education of Young Children (has 5 guidelines)

5. establishing reciprocal relationships w/ families
