Factors Contributing to Sleep Deprivation
Include consumption of caffeine, food, drugs, alcohol, work or school requirements, failure to wind down before bed, stress, medical conditions, an uncomfortable sleeping environment, and social influences.
Affective Functioning
Refers to a person's experience of their emotions, which can be influenced by sleep deprivation.
Behavioural Functioning
Refers to a person's observable actions, affected by sleep deprivation leading to difficulty controlling behavior, increased risk-taking, impulsiveness, reduced productivity, and work efficiency.
Cognitive Functioning
Refers to a person's mental processing, affected by sleep deprivation causing memory problems, decreased alertness, poor concentration, impaired problem-solving, poor judgment, lack of motivation, trouble coping with change or stress, difficulty learning new concepts, slower thinking, and a shortened attention span.
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
The percentage of alcohol in the bloodstream, with legal limits set for driving to ensure safe affective and cognitive functioning.
Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS)
A circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized by a delay in sleep onset and awakening, leading to a shifted circadian rhythm and difficulty achieving recommended sleep amounts.
Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder (ASPD)
A circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized by an advance in sleep onset and awakening timing, causing individuals to fall asleep earlier than desired and wake up earlier than needed.
