7 MDMP steps

The 7 Steps of MDMP in Detail

  • Step 1: Receipt of Mission: Alerts the staff and commander to initiate planning, prompting the issuance of a Warning Order (WARNORD).

  • Step 2: Mission Analysis: The staff analyzes the higher headquarters order, conducts intelligence preparation of the battlefield (IPB), and defines specified/implied tasks to produce a mission statement.

  • Step 3: COA Development: Develops options for accomplishing the mission, including generating, arraying forces, and creating a scheme of maneuver.

  • Step 4: COA Analysis (War-gaming):Identifies difficulties, consequences, and risks for each COA through wargaming to refine the plan.

  • Step 5: COA Comparison: Evaluates COAs against established criteria to identify the best option, often using a decision matrix.

  • Step 6: COA Approval: The commander selects the best COA and may provide refined guidance.

  • Step 7: Orders Production: The staff turns the approved COA into a detailed plan or order (OPORD) for execution.
