New cards

A ratio is

is a comparison of two numbers. For example;

boys to girls

cats : dogs

right : wrong.

2
New cards

In Trigonometry, the comparison is between

the sides of right triangle

3
New cards

What is never used in calculations?

This is 90°…this makes the triangle a

right triangle. Without it, we can do

this trig. We will not use it in our

calculations.

4
New cards

What angles are used in trig?

We will use the acute, complementary angles

5
New cards

What is the hypotenuse?

the angle across from the right angle

6
New cards

What can the adjacent NEVER be?

The hypotenuse

7
New cards

How are sides referred to?

in terms of their relationship to the angle

8
New cards

Sine

•Sine

•pronounced “sin”

•Opposite side over hypotenuse O/H

9
New cards

Cosine

•pronounced “cos”

•adjacent side over hypotenuse A/H

10
New cards

Tangent

•pronounced “tan”

•opposite side over adjacent side O/A

11
New cards

Theta

•Greek letter

•represents an unknown angle

An O with a horizontal strike through it

12
New cards

Who is the princess that helps with memorization?

Soh Cah Toa

13
New cards

If you are looking for the missing side

the ratio of sides is angle measure

14
New cards

Given sin, cos, tang

use the ratio of sides sin-1, cos-1, tan-1

15
New cards

Calculator must be in…

degree

16
New cards

How do you find the sine from a side to side comparison

divide, get answer, check chart, find degree

17
New cards

How to find decimal value for ratio?

use sin, cos, tan and the number

18
New cards

How to find angle value from decimal

use negative sin, cos, tan and the decimal in parentheses

19
New cards

Rules for sine decimal

as angle increases, sine increases until you hit 90 and it goes back down

45=7.071 same as cosine

90= 1

20
New cards

Cosine decimal rules

as angle increases the cosine decreases until it hits 90

45=7.071 same as sine

90=0

21
New cards

Tangent decimal rules

as angle increases the tangent function increases

45= 1

90= undefined

22
New cards

What do the angles 20 and 70 have in common

-they’re both 20 degrees away from an endpoint to either side (0-90) OR they add together to equal 90

-this means 20’s sine is 70’s cosine and 20’s cosine is 70’s sine

-this also means that when their tangents are multiplied, they are inverses and will both become 1

23
New cards

What is true about two angles on the same triangle

-the sin of <1 = the cos of <2 sin of <2 = cos of <1

24
New cards

What is true about every tangent of the two angles being looked at in the right triangle

-they are inverses (<1 = 12/5 <2 = 5/12)

-if when added the two angles equal 90, their tangents multiplied will equal 1

-sin/cos=tan because O/H divided by A/H becomes O/A

(Don’t forget fraction division is multiplication but second is flipped)

25
New cards

A ratio of the sides of a right triangle is called a

Trigonometric ratio
