Ipsilateral reflex
Response occurs on the same side of the body as the stimulus
Contralateral reflex
Response occurs on the opposite side of the body from the stimulus
Monosynaptic reflex
One synapse between sensory and motor neuron very fast (example knee-jerk reflex)
Polysynaptic reflex
Two or more synapses with interneurons slower but more complex (example withdrawal reflex)
Reciprocal activation
When one muscle contracts the opposing muscle relaxes to prevent conflict
Reciprocal activation example
In knee-jerk reflex quadriceps contract while hamstrings relax
