Inorganic Nomenclature
The naming of elements and inorganic compounds.
Element
The simplest form of matter that cannot be broken down by chemical processes.
Symbol
A one or two-letter abbreviation used to represent an element.
Metal
A class of elements that are typically shiny, malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity.
Nonmetal
Elements that are typically dull, brittle, poor conductors of heat and electricity, and often gases at room temperature.
Semi-metal (Metalloid)
Elements that exhibit properties of both metals and nonmetals.
Cation
An ion with a positive charge, typically formed by metals.
Anion
An ion with a negative charge, typically formed by nonmetals.
Monatomic Ion
An ion consisting of only one atom.
Diatomic Ion
An ion composed of two atoms.
Polyatomic Ion
An ion consisting of more than one atom.
Ionic Compound
A compound made up of one positive ion and one negative ion.
Binary Compound
A compound consisting of two different kinds of atoms.
Ternary Compound
A compound containing at least one polyatomic ion.
Chemical Formula
Symbols and subscripts that indicate the types and numbers of atoms in a compound.
Stock System
A method of naming metal ions with more than one charge, using Roman numerals.
Hydrate
A compound that contains water molecules within its structure.
Acid
A compound that begins with 'H' and is typically dissolved in water.
