what does “unhappiness consists in the disproportion between our desires and faculties”
our feelings are tied to our desires:
pain creates a desire to escape it and pleasure creates a desire to prolong it. desire itself creates privations - “a lack of something” - which is unhappiness in itself
therefore, if our faculties, or our abilities match to satisfy our desires = happiness
if our desires are larger than our abilities = unhappiness
what is the logic of desire?
to avoid being unhappy from the disproportion of our faculties and our desires, we have to figure out what we want (our desires) and how we can fulfill them (faculties).
