What is basal lamina?
-thin mat of extracellular matrix secreted by epithelial cells supports overlying epithelium
-not visible
What is epithelial-connective tissue interface?
-site where epithelial and connective tissues meet
What is basement membrane?
-thin layer visible with light microscope beneath epithelium
-combination of basal lamina and reticular lamina
What is epithelial ridges or rete pegs?
-epithelial extensions reaching down into connective tissue
-correlated to gingival stippling in healthly perio
What is connective tissue papillae?
finger-like extensions projecting up into epithelium
What are the functions of epithelial connective tissue interface?
-enhances adhesion of epithelium to connective tissue by increasing surface area
-provides larger area to facilitates nutrient exchange.
What is Desmosomes?
-create cell to cell connection
-important form of cell junction found in gingival epithelium
What is Hemidesmosomes?
-important form of cell junction found in gingival epithelium
-create cell to basal lamina connection
What are the 3 anatomical areas of gingival epithelium?
-oral epithelium
-sulcular epithelium
-junctional epithelium
What is Oral epithelium?
-outer surface of free gingiva and attached gingiva from crest of margin to mucogingival junction
-4 layers
-keratinized
What is sulcular epithelium?
epithelial lining of the sulcus continuous with OE
-thin keratinized
-permeable, allows fluid flow
-3 layers (superficial, prickle, basal)
What is Junctional epithelium?
-base of the sulcus and joins gingiva to tooth
-slightly coronal to CEJ
-non-keratinized and semipermeable
-easiest entry point for bacteria into CT
-only has 2 layers (basal and prickle)
What are the three functions of JE?
-barrier
-attachement
-host defense
