Define tonicity
The ability of a solution to change cell volume/pressure by osmosis
What happens in isotonic solutions?
No net water movement; cell stays the same
What happens in hypotonic solutions?
Water enters cell —> swelling, lysis (hemolysis in RBCs)
What happens in hypertonic solutions?
Water leaves cell —> shrinking (crenation)
