Substance Use Disorder
Repeated use of a chemical substance, leading to clinically significant impairment during a 12-month period.
Non-Substance-Related Disorders
Behavioral or process addictions, such as gambling, sexual activity, shopping, social media, and internet gaming.
Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST)
A screening tool used to assess alcohol-related problems.
Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST)
A screening tool used to assess drug-related problems.
CAGE Questionnaire
A screening tool with questions about Cutting down, Annoyance, Guilt, and Eye-openers related to substance use.
Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT)
A screening tool used to identify alcohol use disorders.
Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment of Alcohol Scale (CIWA)
A scale used to assess and manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale (COWS)
A scale used to assess and monitor opiate withdrawal symptoms.
Opioid Agonists
Substances that attach to CNS receptors, causing CNS depression (e.g., heroin, morphine).
Naloxone (Narcan)
The antidote used to relieve opioid toxicity effects.
Abstinence Syndrome
Withdrawal manifestations associated with Opioid Agonist use.
CNS Depressants
Substances that can produce physiological and psychological dependence and can have cross-tolerance (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines).
Flumazenil
An IV antidote for benzodiazepine toxicity.
Delirium Tremens
A severe alcohol withdrawal syndrome that can occur 2-3 days after cessation of chronic alcohol consumption; MEDICAL EMERGENCY AND CAN PROGRESS TO DEATH!
Refeeding Syndrome
Potentially fatal complication that can occur when fluids, electrolytes, and carbohydrates are reintroduced to a severely malnourished client.
Anorexia Nervosa
Persistent energy intake restriction leading to significant low body weight with a fear of gaining weight or becoming fat.
Bulimia Nervosa
Recurrent eating large quantities of food over a short period of time, followed by inappropriate compensatory behaviors to rid the body of excess calories.Occurs on average once a week for 3 months.
Binge Eating Disorder
Recurrently eat large quantities of food over a short period of time WITHOUT the use of compensatory behaviors associated with bulimia nervosa. At least once per week for 3 months.
Russell’s Sign
Calluses or scars on the hand, typically on the knuckles, resulting from self-induced vomiting.
