CNS
Central Nervous System, composed of the brain and spinal cord.
PNS
Peripheral Nervous System, consisting of cranial and spinal nerves and ganglia.
Gyri
Ridges on the cerebral cortex.
Sulci
Grooves on the cerebral cortex.
Thalamus
A sensory relay station that conveys information to the cortex.
Hypothalamus
Regulates homeostasis and controls various bodily functions such as temperature and energy metabolism.
Basal Ganglia
Consists of five nuclei involved in motor control and initiating voluntary movement.
Hippocampus
Part of the limbic system, important for memory and emotional control.
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Fluid that surrounds and protects the brain, formed by the choroid plexus.
Circle of Willis
A circular arterial structure at the base of the brain that provides dual blood supply.
