Federalists vs. Democratic-Republicans
The political division in Washington's administration between those favoring a strong central government and those favoring strong state governments, led by Hamilton and Jefferson, respectively.
Democratic Party
Political party created by Andrew Jackson, supporting Jacksonian ideals.
Whigs
Opponents of Jackson, marking the second two-party system in the US.
Hartford Convention
Killed the Federalist Party after fateful meeting at Hartford.
John Marshall
Chief Justice whose decisions strengthened the federal government for about thirty years.
Marbury vs. Madison
Established judicial review, giving the Supreme Court the power to declare laws unconstitutional.
McCullough vs. Maryland
Supreme Court case where Maryland tried to tax the bank, but the court ruled against it.
Gibbons vs. Ogden
Supreme Court case involving steamboats, ruling that interstate commerce is controlled by the federal government.
Worcester vs. Georgia
Supreme Court case ruling natives' lands can't be stripped away, but Jackson ignored it, leading to the Trail of Tears.
Growth of Sectionalism
A sense of regional allegiance and prioritizing the interests of one's own region over the nation.
Embargo Act of 1807
Jefferson's policy of stopping trade in an attempt to remain neutral, seen as his biggest mistake.
Nullification Crisis
South Carolina threatened to nullify the tariff, leading to a standoff between Jackson and South Carolina. Resolved by Henry Clay.
Second Great Awakening
A period of religious revival that led to new religious sects, reforms, abolition movements, and the temperance movement.
Temperance Movement
Movement to reduce or eliminate the consumption of alcohol.
Colonization
Idea to end slavery and send former slaves back to Africa, leading to the creation of Liberia.
No Nothing Party
Political party that emerged as an anti-Irish party, showing pushback against increased immigration.
Indian Removal
Jackson's controversial policy to remove Native Americans from their lands
Trail of Tears
Forcible relocation of the Cherokee, due to Jackson's policies.
Era of Good Feeling
Post-War of 1812 period of national unity and developing American culture.
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Largest slave revolt in American History.
Telegraph & Morse Code
Led to instant communication, affecting both business and industry.
McCormick's Reaper & John Deere's Steel Plow
Inventions that increase agricultural production, and the ability to move westward.
American System
A system involving factories in the North, cotton in the South, and farmers in the Mississippi area that required roads, a bank, and a tariff.
Monroe Doctrine
President Monroe's message to European countries to not interfere in the Americas.
Missouri Compromise
Resolved the issue of slavery in new territories by drawing a line; territories above would be free, territories below slave.
