Asthma
A chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by airway obstruction, wheezing, and responsive inflammation.
Pathophysiology
The study of the functional changes that accompany a particular syndrome or disease.
IgE
Immunoglobulin E; a type of antibody produced by the immune system in response to allergens.
Quick-Relief Medications
Medications such as short-acting beta2 agonists used to provide immediate relief from asthma symptoms.
Controller Medications
Medications used on a regular basis to prevent asthma symptoms and control chronic inflammation.
Epinephrine auto-injector
A device designed to deliver a dose of epinephrine for the treatment of anaphylaxis.
Monitoring
Regular assessment of a patient’s condition to gauge the effectiveness of treatment and adjust medications as needed.
SMART Dosing
Single Maintenance and Reliever Therapy; a treatment strategy where the same medication is used for both maintenance and rescue.
Leukotriene receptor antagonists
A class of medications that block leukotrienes, which are inflammatory substances in the body related to asthma.
Anaphylaxis
A severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs rapidly.
