Hypotheses
Statements about the prediction of results that can be verified or disproved by investigation.
Null Hypothesis (H0)
Predicts no difference in results between conditions.
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha or H1)
Predicts a significant difference in results between conditions; also known as the experimental hypothesis.
One-tailed (directional) hypotheses
State a specific direction of expected results movement (e.g., higher, lower).
Two-tailed (non-directional) hypotheses
State a difference between conditions without specifying the direction.
Research Hypotheses
Include an alternative hypothesis (one-tailed or two-tailed) and a corresponding null hypothesis.
Hypothesis Testing
After research, psychologists accept one hypothesis and reject the other based on the results.
Acceptance of Hypotheses
If a difference is found, psychologists accept the alternative hypothesis and reject the null; vice versa if no difference is found.
