“she stood in her garden” “she could hear the cries of the people”

The image of a garden brings forth a sense of peace and serenity. This however juxtaposes the feelings of torture and distress felt by the people at the station.

The writer amplifies this contrast through the use of an enjambment between the line describing her mother in her garden and those at the station.

This writer does this to show the reader the detriment of the suffering of those at the station.

“she felt it was endless - their noises”

The caesura used in this line shows how reflective her mother was about the constant “cries” she heard. This combined with the semantic field of prolonged pain felt by many of those at the station shows how many people were suffering as a result of the colonization that had taken place and the partition of her country. The

3
New cards

Give quotes which show the semantic field of prolonged pain of those at the station and her mother not being able to do anything about it.

What do they show?

  • “it was endless”

  • “every day”

  • “each day”

  • “each day passed”

They show that she was tortured by all that was going on but she was so helpless she could don’t anything about it

4
New cards

What quotes show her mother was helpless?

  • “ she felt it was endless”

  • “she stood in the garden listening”

  • “each day day she wished she wished she had the courage”

  • “each day passed with her listening to cries”

5
New cards

Analyse the contract in continuous and past tense, using quotes.

Suggest what effect it has

  • “ she stood in the garden listening”

The juxtaposition of the past tense of the verb “stood” and the continuous tense in the verb “listening”.

The past tense of the verb “stood” indicates that she is fixed and set on being comfortable, and that she isn’t going to venture out to try and help because she prefers to be in the safe space of her “garden” than go out to the perhaps scary and risky Ahmedabad station where there are “endless” cries, simply because “she felt afraid”.

The reader later on understands that she regrets giving in to fearful thoughts

6
New cards

What quotes suggests that she regrets not helping those at the Station

  • “I still fell guilty about that”

  • “but I wish I had gone with my Aunt”

This is further shown in the change of tense from then (when her mother was younger and was surrounded by all the torture) and “now” (when her mother is telling her the story”

This change in tense exaggerates how long ago it was but suggests that she is still heavily burdened by it and tortured
