DNA replication
The process by which DNA is copied to pass on to daughter cells.
Semiconservative model
A model of DNA replication where each new double helix consists of one original strand and one newly synthesized strand.
Conservative model
A model of DNA replication where the parent double helix remains intact and both strands of daughter helices are newly synthesized.
Dispersive model
A model of DNA replication where both strands of daughter helices contain segments of both original and newly synthesized DNA.
Watson-Crick model
The model of DNA replication postulated by Watson and Crick involving unwinding of the double helix and complementary base pairing.
DNA polymerase
An enzyme that catalyzes the formation of DNA molecules by adding nucleotides to a growing DNA strand.
Okazaki fragments
Short DNA fragments synthesized on the lagging strand during DNA replication.
Initiator protein
A protein that binds to the origin of replication to initiate DNA replication.
Holliday junction
A structure that forms during recombination involving interwoven DNA strands.
Gene conversion
A process that results in deviations from expected Mendelian segregation ratios due to mismatches in heteroduplex DNA.
