Prejudice
An attitude towards people based on their group membership.
Explicit Prejudice
Attitudes that we consciously endorse and can easily report.
Implicit Prejudice
Attitudes that are involuntary, uncontrollable, and sometimes unconscious.
Stereotype
Beliefs we hold about what members of different social groups are like.
Benevolent Sexism
A seemingly positive ideology that holds women as pure and in need of protection by men.
Hostile Sexism
Prejudicial attitudes that express negative beliefs about women, including domination and oppression.
Ingroup Bias
The tendency to favor one's own group over others.
Outgroup Homogeneity Effect
The perception that outgroup members are more similar to one another than ingroup members.
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
A process whereby expectations about an individual lead to behavior that confirms those expectations.
Stereotype Threat
A concern about confirming negative stereotypes that negatively influences performance.
Realistic Group Conflict Theory
Prejudice arises from competition between groups for scarce resources.
Social Identity Theory
The theory that a person's sense of who they are is based on their group membership.
The Implicit Association Test (IAT)
A measure of implicit prejudice based on the speed of positive and negative reactions to target groups.
