What kind of tissue is blood?
connective
What is matrix?
plasma; consists of oxygen, calcium, iron, and vitamins
What is matrix responsible for?
transportation of the cellular components of blood
What do erythrocytes do?
carry oxygen
What do leukocytes do?
have roles in the immune system
What do platelets do?
help in clotting process
What are erythrocytes?
most numerous cells in blood, site of gas exchange, no nuclei or mitochondria in mature mammal blood, short lifespan of only a few weeks
How do erythrocytes go through gas exchange?
binding of oxygen to hemoglobin is a reversible process, most of the carbon dioxide carried out of the tissues in the form of carbonic acid, but some binds to hemoglobin; low levels of erythrocytes causes anemia
What is the difference between granulocytes and agranulocytes?
has granules and doesn’t have granules
What are the types of leukocytes?
granulocytes and agranulocytes
What are the types of granulocytes?
basophils, neutrophils, and eosinophils
What are the types of agranulocytes?
monocytes and lymphocytes
What are neutrophils?
granulocytes; polymorphic nucleus (3 to 5 lobes, dark purple), active in phagocytosis
What are eosinophils?
granulocytes; bilobed, dark purple nucleus; red granules in the cytoplasm, fights parasitic worm infections
What are basophils?
granulocytes; rarest, difficult to tell nucleus from cytoplasm, participate in allergic reactions by releasing histamine from granules in cytoplasm
What are monocytes?
agranulocytes; very big, nucleus is horseshoe shaped, transforms into a wander macrophage
What are lymphocytes?
agranulocytes; smallest leukocyte, usually have a spherical nucleus and a thin cytoplasm, possess a “memory bank” of what your immune system has encountered before
What are platelets/thrombocytes?
fragments of a large cell (megakaryocyte), responsible for blood clotting (thrombus and thrombosis)
What is thrombosis?
diagnosable medical symptoms following a blood clot
What is a thrombus?
blood clot
