Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change type and/or form.
Potential Energy
Energy of position or stored energy in readiness.
Kinetic Energy
Energy of action or energy in motion.
Gravitational Potential Energy (G.P.E)
Stored energy an object has due to its height, calculated as G.P.E = weight x height.
Mechanical Energy
Energy required to move mass.
Thermal Energy
Energy derived from particle movement.
Chemical Energy
Energy stored within chemical bonds.
Nuclear Energy
Energy stored within the nucleus of an atom.
Electrical Energy
Energy derived from the movement of charged particles.
Electromagnetic Energy
Energy that moves in waves.
Nonrenewable Resources
Resources that cannot be replenished at the rate of consumption.
Fossil Fuels
Nonrenewable energy sources derived from organic material that is buried.
Renewable Resources
Resources that have a relatively endless supply due to quick replenishment.
Solar Energy
Energy harnessed from the sun.
Hydroelectric Energy
Energy produced from the flow of water.
Geothermal Energy
Energy produced from the Earth's natural heat.
