At the start of the play it is clear that John has had an affair with Abigail which has repercussions for his marriage, the wider community for Salem and his own life.

Consequently, as the witch trials take effect the community is riddled with conflicts and people settling scores as the girls’ power has a negative impact.
A key scene in the play is when Elizabeth Proctor is accused and this brings forth the central conflict of the play between both women in John’s life and his conflict with the court’s integrity.

At the end of the play, John chooses to go to his death rather than sign a fake confession which helps bring the conflict across Salem’s community and John’s own internal struggle to their end.

“The crucible by Arthur Miller is a play which -reference to question-. The play follows the witchcraft trials set in a small town called Salem in the 1600’s. The play focuses on the protagonist John Proctor, as he struggles to overcome his past problems such as when committed adultery with Abigail Williams which eventually controls and influences the outcome of the play. Abigail charges various citizens of practising witchcraft, leading to Proctor’s death. With the use of characterisation, key scene and dialogue Arthur Miller successfully conveys/demonstrates and (refer back to question).
Conclusion
In conclusion “The crucible” By Arthur miller - refer to question - Had Proctor been able to overcome his excessive pride, forgive himself for the the adultery he committed and not been so preoccupied with his past transgressions and reputation in Salem. He could have revealed his knowledge of Abigail earlier in the play and prevented the deaths of many people, as well as his own. Ultimately it was his inability to forgive himself which was his fatal flaws and Miller successfully conveys the power conscience has over us. The play as a whole provides a powerful message about the dangers of being swept up in hysteria as well as the difficulties placed upon an individual to conform to society.
