Definiton of hydrogen bonds

Electrostatic attraction between a hydrogen atom on one molecule and the lone pair from a highly electronegative atom on another molecule.

2
New cards

Where does attraction have to be drawn from

Lone pair to H atom or wont be correct.

What are anomalous properties of water

  • Ice is less dense than water: due to rigid H bonds which form open lattices as they push.

  • Unusually high melting/boiling point: H bonds are strongest intermolecular forces requiring more energy to overcome.

New cards

Which are the most electronegative atoms and why

Nitrogen, Oxygen and Fluorine(NOF)

they are diatomic so have more electrons.
