Crazing
common glaze defect
easy to correct
when thermal expansion characteristics of body and glaze differ
Shivering
glaze defect
small, sharp, jagged-edged pieces that detach themselves from the body of work
reverse of crazing
dangerous because it can get into food
Crawling
caused by high index of surface tension in melting glaze
caused by bad application
characteristics: excessively powdery and does not fully adhere to surface
alleviated by adding small amount of gum to glaze or extra flux
common in matte glaze
in excess fluxes (i.e. zinc or magnesium) can cause crawling
Pitting/Pinholing
Caused by badly controlled firing cycle, glaze composition, or from the body of piece (i.e. white clay that has high grogg)
Blistering
AKA bless
result of excessively thick application of glaze, incomplete clay prep, wedging, bulging, etc.
also can be due to overfishing or soluble fluxes in glaze
ex. borax, boric acid, potassium carbonate, magnesium sulfate, sodium carbonate
