Sickle Scaler
heavy instrument used to remove supragingival calculus
have a flat surface and two cutting edges converge in sharply pointed tip
Rubber cups
consists of rubber shell with or without webbed configurations in hollow interior
used in the hanadpiece w/ special prophylaxis angle
use a good cleansing and polishing paste that contains fluoride, keep it moist to minimize frictional heat.
Bristle Brushes
available in wheel and cup
bristles are stiff
use of brush should beconfined to crown
Dental tape/floss
used for polishing proximal surfaces that are inaccessible to other polishing ins.
Accessibility
facilitates throughness of instrumentation.
position of px and operator should provide maximal accessibility to area of operation
Modified pen grasp
pad of middle finger rest on shank
Standard pen grasp
side of middle finger rest on shankp
palm and thumb grasp
used for stabilizing instruments during sharpening
Intraoral conventional finger rest
fourth finger rest on occlusal surface of adj teethI
Intraoral cross-arch finger rest
fourth finger rest on incisal surface of tooth and opposite side of same arch
Intraoral opposite arch finger rest
fourth finger rest on mandibular teeth while max. post. teeth are instrumented
Intraoral finger on finger rest
fourth finger rest on index of non operating hand
extraoral palm up fulcrum
backs of fingers rest on right lateral aspect of mandible while max. right post, teeth are instrumented
extraoral palm down
front surfaces of fingers rest on left lateral aspect of mandible while max. left post. are instrumented
Index finger - reinforced rest
index finger placed on shank for pressure and control
Thumb reinforced rest
thumb is placed on handle for control in max. right. post. lingual region
ADAPTATION
manner which working end of periodontal instrument placed against surface of tooth
objective is to make working end of instrument conform to contour of tooth.
LATERAL PRESSURE
refers to pressure created when force is applied against surface of tooth
Explatory Stroke
light “feeling” stroke used with probes and explorer evaluate dimensions of pocket and to detect calculus and irregularities of tooth surfface.
Scaling stroke
short, powerful pull stroke used with bladed instrument for removal of both supragingival and subgingival calculus
Root planning stroke
moderate to light pull stroke used for final smoothing and planing of root
Scaling
process by which biofilm and calculus are removed from both supragingival and subgingivval tooth surface
