Fibers: nylon 6 vs. 6.6, other fiber used

90% of commercial carpet is manufactured with nylon, first, why do you synthetic fiber

There are no performance difference between 6 and 6.6. The difference is the melting point, which does not affect the performance. Carpet manufacturers, who extrude their own nylon extrude nylon 6

Why nylon 6

  • easier to manufactures to extrude themselves

  • Allows for better quality control and control the supply chain

  • Less expensive than nylon 6.6

  • Easier to recycle and more sustainable

Wool

  • Pros: flame resistant, low soil, sustainable, pleasing texture

  • Cons: expensive, difficult to remove, difficult to remove stains, allergenic, high static charge

PET (Polyethylene terephthalate): used in food and beverages

  • pros: inherent stain resistance, softer feel, more cost effective than other fibers, recycled

  • Cons: crushes easily

Construction differences between tiles and broadloom

Carpet tile

  • primary backing - locks in tufts and adds dimensional stability to the product

  • High performance pre coat

  • Thermoplastic compound

  • Fiberglass reinforcement- creates stability

Broadloom

  • Primary backing- locks in tufts and maintain pattern integrity

  • Enriched polymer- ensure the tufts stay in place and prevent delamination

  • Woven secondary backing- helps maintain dimensionalnstability
