Exteroception
Sensory information that comes from outside a person's body, such as vision, smell, and auditory information.
Proprioception
Sensory information that comes from sources in the muscles, joints, and bodily movements, providing feedback about the body's position.
Closed-loop control system
A system that uses feedback to compare the anticipated state with the actual state and makes corrections accordingly.
Muscle Spindles
Proprioceptors that detect changes in muscle length and trigger reflex contraction to protect against overstretching.
Golgi Tendon Organ
Proprioceptors that detect muscle tension and inhibit force production of the agonist while facilitating the antagonist.
Ventral Stream
A visual pathway involved in recognizing objects (the 'what' system) that operates primarily in well-lit conditions.
Dorsal Stream
A visual pathway that determines the location of objects (the 'where' system) and operates nonconsciously, crucial for balance and movement direction.
Monosynaptic reflex
A reflex where a stretch in the muscle is detected and a contraction is triggered with a single synapse in the spinal cord.
Polysynaptic reflex
A more complex reflex involving multiple synapses, leading to a larger EMG activity and longer latency than monosynaptic reflexes.
Audition and Motor Control
The role of hearing in motor control, where auditory feedback delays can affect timing and accuracy in motor tasks such as speech and instrument play.
