Election of 1808

Jefferson leaves presidency after two terms and Madison takes office after getting 122 of the 169 electoral votes over Pickney. This election help claim the democratic republican dominance.

The Prophet & Tecumseh

American General Harrison governor of the Indiana Territory meets with NA leader Tecumseh and his brother The Prophet. The brothers form a confederation of multiple NA tribes from all over the country to stop people who are selling land to the US. They gather allies even from Florida. Harrison marches into Prophetstown and withelds the NA attack leading to loss of confidence for the NA. So then Harrison destroyed the town. The Battle was mostly a draw. The confederation fell apart but fighting along frontier still occurred.

Oliver Hazard Perry

Leader of Battle of Lake Erie who helped destroy British Vessels to gain the victory and control of Lake Erie and ease into The Battle of Thames. He is from SK, RI

Battle of Lake Erie

Madison send Perry to lead the attack in Lake Erie resulting in destroying British vessels. It came to show that a quarter of Perry’s fleet were black men which showed how the color of your skin didn’t affect anything or performance in battle. We get Detroit back after British are unable to tend it. This leads to the Battle at Thames RIver where Tecumseh dies but US wins control of Lake Ontario giving them access to invade Canada.

Lead battle of NO and was a very intelligent and well experienced advisor for the US fleet.

Battle of New Orleans

Occurred after the war technically ended but the words from the treaty of Ghent hadn’t been fully released yet. GB was trying to capture the city of NO and the Mississippi river for trade. Jackson was in charge of the defenses around the city for the US and made it so GB got stuck in tough conditions so they could attack them from behind. GB loss greatly and gave the US and huge win and made Jackson famoud for his leadership.

How did our navy fare against the British Navy? Why was control of the Great lakes key to US success?

GB had a much stronger fleet but the US used privateers which were privately owned ships that were able to attack british ships. With the US in control of the great lakes it gave them a bigger advantage because GB couldn’t move south so the US could attack them better and GB couldn’t attack them from Canada.

What was Great Britain’s three pronged plan?

To first blockade the US from trading with outside countrys to destroy their economy

Then to attack and invade the US form Canada

Then help NA fight off the US by providing weapons and goods to slow down US expansion

It didn't fully succeed.

They were against the war from the start, the hartford convention failed and made them look unpatriotic, and lastly the democratic Republicans supported the war and when the US won they because dominant

What were the results of the war?

Neither nesacerily won but most say US gained many things from it. The war ended with the TReaty of GHent saying no land chages. They because stronger and more independent from GB. They were able to move west because the NA became weak
