the desire fore group members to achieve their goals
Forces acting to maintain/keep members in group
2 kinds - task and social
Whats task cohesion?
result and outcome based
More important for success
Players may hate each other yet still succeed
Whats social cohesion?
working together and interacting
If task and social cohesion are high, group dynamic will work very well
What is carrons anteredent in relation to the factors effecting cohesion?
it relates to 4 factors - environmental, personal, team and leadership
Environmental eg. Group size, age, geography, contractual obligations - more difficult for rugby due to having 13 players then netball having 7 - difficult in cohesion
Personal - group similarities, gender, aspirations/satisfactions
Team - ability, stability, desire for sucsess, shared experience
Leadership - leader style, leader team relation
What are the features of working in a group?
teamwork
Leaders
Communication/listening
trust
Support
Interaction/responsibility
Shared objective/common goal
Collective identity
What 4 stages did psychologist Tuckman suggest are included in the development of groups/sports teams?
forming - getting to know each other in the team - eg team bonding
Storming - brainstorming ideas/multiple ideas (conflict) - eg deciding who does what in relay
norming - making a decision/cooperation - eg successful/winning with new plans/team
What is the performance of a team effected by?
cohesion
What did stiener suggest about productivity to help explain team performance?
he saw it as an equations of actual productivity = potential productivity - losses due to faulty processes
What does he mean by actual productivity?
it is the result
What does he mean by potential productivity?
the groups best result
What is group coordination?
working well together
What is the faulty process?
what goes wrong such as, lacking cohesion, group coordination, motivation and social loafing (and the ringleman effect)
What are the team coordination problems?
It happens when theres mote people as that means more coordination or qhen teams are not as interactive for example
its caused by:
Poor strategy
Poor tactics
Misunderstanding of coach
Lack of communication
Eg in rugby and football
Whats social loafing/the ringleman effect?
it is a faulty process
Where one person is not putting in effort - its less noticeable if its one player in a big team
And the idea of ringleman is by adding someone else less effort is put in by the rest
Co active - is when you cant hide it as other players know
How to stop or avoid social loafing?
you must motivate players
What may cause social loafing?
loss of motivation
Low confidence
Low ability
Low leadership qualities
How can social loafing be avoided?
setting individual goals
More challenging roles
Give a specific role to them in the team
Rewards
Tactics are clear
Established group identity
Using statistics to highlight individual performance
