Attention
The process by which certain information is selected for further processing and other information is discarded.
Bottom-up attention
Attention that is involuntarily captured by external stimuli.
Top-down attention
Attention that is voluntarily directed according to our goals and thoughts.
Selective Attention
The process of picking out and maintaining focus on a particular quality, object, or event while ignoring other stimuli.
Overt attention
Attention that corresponds with eye fixation and is suggested by posture and head movements.
Covert attention
Attention that is not accompanied by eye or head movements.
Frontal lobe
Cortical region responsible for maintaining vigilance in attention.
Parietal lobe
Cortical region involved in the representation of spatial information and top-down attention control.
Superior colliculus
Subcortical structure involved in directing eye movements.
Balint's syndrome
A condition where only one or a small subset of objects is perceived at the same time due to damage in the posterior parietal and occipital cortices.
Hemispatial neglect
A disorder characterized by reduced attention to one side of the visual field, often due to right parietal damage.
Dorsal attention network
A network involving frontal and parietal areas that controls spatial attention.
Ventral attention network
A network that includes the temporoparietal junction and ventral frontal cortex, involved in stimulus-driven control.
Attentional capacity test
WAIS Digits Span Forward/Backward, used to measure attention capacity.
Working memory test
WAIS Digits Span Backward, used for mental tracking.
Concentration test
Stroop test, used to measure focused attention.
Divided attention test
Trail Making Test, used to assess divided attention capabilities.
Reflexive attention
Attention driven by a stimulus.
Voluntary attention
Attention driven by current goals and behaviors.
Frontoparietal network
Network involved in reorienting attention.
