Tonicity
the ability of a solution to cause osmosis
isotonic
Equal distribution of cellulites, no net loss or no net gain. Constant state of dynamic equilibrium.
Hypotonic
there is less solute outside the cell than inside
What happens to a hypotonic cell?
The solute will want to rush in to the higher concentrated area, since there is more solute outside than inside the solute will rush in and cause the cell to swell and burst. (lysis)
Hypertonic
There is more solute inside the cell than outside
What happens to a hypertonic cell?
Since there is more solute inside the cell than outside, the solute will want to rush out of the cell causing the cell to shrink and cremate. (lysis)
