Latitude
Lat=Flat
Lines run horizontally
1 Degree = 60 Minutes
1 Minute=60 Seconds
They will only refer to minutes on the exam
What is the center point for longitude?
The prime meridian that runs through england
What is the center point for latitude?
The equator
In the US what degrees of latitude and longitude will we be working with
West Longitude
North Latitude
As you move from right to left your degrees of latitude will increase
Because as we move west or left we are getting further away from the prime meridian line in England.
What does each black tick mark indicate?
one minute (there are 60 tick marks in one full degree of latitude or longitude)
How many minutes are in a full quadrent?
3o minutes
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 21.) What airport is located approximately 47 (Degrees) 40 (Minutes) N latitude and 101 (Degrees) 26 (Minutes) W longitude?
Garrison Airport
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 21) What airport is located at approximately 47 (Degrees) 21 (Minutes) and 101.1 (Degrees) W longitude?
Washburn
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 26) Lines of latitude, like the one at ares 4, measure what?
The degrees of latitude north and south of the equator
What is a VFR Checkpoint?
Visual Flight Rules Checkpoint
Represented by magenta flags
Only used for manned aircrafts
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 20, area 2.) Why is the magenta colored flag over Lake Drummond of importance to a RPIC?
Manned aircraft pilots will use this as a VFR checkpoint to communicate their intentions with ATC. These areas will have a higher concentration of manned aircraft activity.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 23) What are the magenta flag symbols at Statesboro Bulloch County Airport, Claxton-Evans County Airport, and Ridgeland airport?
VFR checkpoints for position identification before entering Class C airspace at Savannah.
Victor Airways
used by General Aircraft traffic and are in Class E airspace. They start at 1,200 feet AGL and can extend up to 18,000 feet MSL.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 75, area 1) What is the lowest elevation depicted by the blue Victor Line T306?
1,200 feet AGL
Well what if we were asked to give the floor of that controlled airspace in MSL instead of AGL? We would first have to determine the elevation of the airport, and then add that to the above ground level altitude of the floor of the airspace.
Know how to do this for the TEST!!!!
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 21, area 1) Find the radio tower that is direct to the south of Minot International Airport (MOT). [Note: The tower is along Interstate 83, with a mean sea level altitude of 2,179 feet.] If you were flying your drone at the maximum altitude above the tower, would you need prior approval from Air Traffic Control?
No, since you would not be flying in surface area Class E airspace designated for an airport
The regulations that cover commercial drone operations in the United States after August 29, 2016, are known as..
Part 107
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 22, area 1) What is the floor of controlled airspace around Sandpoint airport?
2,831 ft MSL
The floor would be 2831 feet MSL because you would add the 700 feet AGL for class E airspace. Add the 700 feet AGL to the Sandpoint airport elevation (2131 feet MSL) to get your answer.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2H, Figure 21, area 1) What is the ceiling of the Class D airspace surrounding Minot International Airport (MOT) in area 1?
4,200 feet mean sea level (MSL)
The 42 in the bracket on the sectional chart means that the ceiling of that airspace is 4200 feet MSL.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2G, Figure 78, Southeast quadrant of chart) You've been asked to inspect a railroad beginning at the town of Onawa and ending to the south, in Blencoe. Which of the following is true?
A remote PIC would NOT need to receive prior airspace authorization from the FAA, since the proposed route would not take place in controlled airspace.
To find out more information about parachute operations in the vicinity of an airport, what would you look at?
Chart Supplements/Airport Facilities Directory
(Refer to Figure 70 and Legend 1) You decide to build your photo portfolio by taking some pictures of Mount Diablo (North of area 5 near Danville) because of its terrain prominence. It stands 3849' above sea level and towers over the surrounding terrain. Looking at the Sectional Chart you notice:
There is concentrated hang glider activity in the area and you must give them the right of way
Altitude Boundaries
Reported in MSL
Ceiling in above dash
altitude on floor level below the dash
True or false:
For instance, if the Class D airspace ceiling was shown as [-20], this would indicate that the airspace goes up to but does NOT include 2,000 feet MSL.
True
Military Training Routes (MTR)
. On sectional charts, Military Training Routes (MTR) are shown as grey lines with an "IR" or a "VR", followed by a series of numbers.
If there are FOUR numbers after the letters, that means that ALL flight segments on that route are BELOW 1,500 feet AGL.
If there are THREE numbers after the letters, that means that at least one segment goes above 1,500 feet AGL.
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2G, Figure 59, area 2) The chart shows a gray line with "VR1667, VR1617, VR1638, and VR1668." Could this area present a hazard to the operations of a small UA?
Yes, this is a Military Training Route from the surface to 1,500 feet AGL
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2G, Figure 59) How tall is the tallest tower in the group of towers located directly south of Area 1?
255 feet above ground level
(Refer to Figure 23 and Legend 1) You've been hired by the town of Sylvania (Area 4, North of Plantation Airport) to get aerial photos for a brochure. As you survey the chart you notice a thin gray line labeled IR18 passes directly over the town. You realize this indicates a:
MTR where high speed low altitude traffic may be present
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2G, Figure 21) Which of the following is TRUE about the military training route located just south of the city of Balfour (approximately 47 degrees 57' N; 100 degrees 32' W)?
It is an IFR military training route with at least one segment above 1,500 feet AGL
(Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2G, Figure 22, area 2) At Coeur D`Alene which frequency should be used as a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) to monitor airport traffic?
122.8 MHz.
Magnetic Variarion
In order to correct for this, sectional charts will show pilots the number of degrees they need to correct for in order for magnetic north to match true north. On the sectional charts, these magnetic variation lines are marked by a magenta dashed line (looks very similar to the Class E airspace line).
