SAT reading

flock

Khi không nói rõ "flock of gì", mà chỉ dùng từ "a flock" trong văn cảnh miêu tả cảnh vật yên bình, đồng cỏ, v.v. thì người đọc thường ngầm hiểu là "đàn cừu".

Một số lý do:

• "Sheep" (cừu) là loài vật phổ biến nhất được nói đến với từ "flock".

• Trong văn học hoặc mô tả phong cảnh, hình ảnh “a flock grazing on a green pasture” hầu như luôn gợi đến đàn cừu.

• Những loài khác như chim (birds) cũng đi với “flock”, nhưng thường bay chứ không "graze" (gặm cỏ).

Tóm lại:

Từ "flock" dùng cho	Khi không nói rõ, thường hiểu là...
sheep (cừu)	✅ đàn cừu (phổ biến nhất)
birds (chim)	❌ nếu không có "flying", thường không hiểu là chim
goats, geese,...	❌ ít gặp và cần nói rõ hơn

Nếu bạn gặp câu như:

• "She saw a flock on the hill." → gần như chắc là đàn cừu nếu có cảnh đồng cỏ, đồi núi.

• Suddenly, she screamed aloud for on the picture she saw a peaceful flock grazing on a green pasture. → một đàn vật nuôi (thường là cừu) đang gặm cỏ trên cánh đồng xanh.

graze (v)

ăn cỏ, chăn thả động vật để cho nó ăn cỏ á (kiểu vậy), to (cause animals to) eat grass:

E.g:

The cows were grazing.

The farmer grazes cattle on this land in the summer months.

Suddenly, she screamed aloud for on the picture she saw a peaceful flock grazing on a green pasture.

🔹 1. graze (as a verb – gây trầy xước, làm trầy da):

➡ Nghĩa: Làm trầy xước nhẹ lớp da hoặc bề mặt do cọ vào thứ gì đó.

Ví dụ:

• He fell down and grazed his knee.
  → Anh ấy ngã và bị trầy đầu gối.

• The bullet just grazed his leg.
  → Viên đạn chỉ sượt qua chân anh ấy, gây trầy nhẹ.

👉 Dịch ra tiếng Việt thường là: trầy, xước, sượt qua và làm trầy nhẹ.

🔹 2. graze (as a verb – chạm nhẹ vào bề mặt khi đi qua):

➡ Nghĩa: Chạm nhẹ vào bề mặt khi một vật thể di chuyển ngang qua – không nhất thiết gây trầy xước.

Ví dụ:

The aircraft's landing gear grazed the treetops.
→ Bộ bánh đáp của máy bay sượt nhẹ qua ngọn cây.

👉 Dịch ra tiếng Việt có thể là: sượt nhẹ qua, lướt nhẹ, trượt qua bề mặt (có hoặc không làm xước).

pasture (n)

đồng cỏ chăn thả gia súc để cho tno ăn á, grass or similar plants suitable for animals such as cows and sheep to eat, or an area of land covered in this:

The sheep were grazing on the lush green pastures.

Some fields are planted with crops for several years, and then returned to pasture for the cattle.

Suddenly, she screamed aloud for on the picture she saw a peaceful flock grazing on a green pasture.

Shepherd /ˈʃep.ɚd/ (check pronounce as well)

ng chăn cừu, a person whose job is to take care of sheep and move them from one place to another:

tragedy (n)

• thảm kịch, một sự kiện hoặc tình huống rất đáng buồn, đặc biệt là sự kiện liên quan đến cái chết hoặc đau khổ, a very sad event or situation, từ “tragedy” vốn có nguồn gốc từ bi kịch Hy Lạp, thường gắn với cái chết, mất mát lớn hoặc đau thương sâu sắc.

• Khi nghe “tragedy”, người bản ngữ thường nghĩ đến tai nạn, thiên tai, chiến tranh, mất người thân...

  • Ví dụ:

County (n)

stand-alone volume

• used to refer to a computer that can operate on its own, without being connected to a network (= a number of computers connected together):

phỏng đoán, a guess about something based on how it seems and not on proof:

"Capacious" là một tính từ mô tả một vật gì đó có khả năng chứa được nhiều, rộng rãi, hoặc có sức chứa lớn. Nó thường được dùng để miêu tả không gian, đồ vật, hoặc thậm chí là khả năng tư duy.

Cách dùng:

• Không gian:

• a secret that you tell someone:

• in confidence (C2) :

trong bí mật (in: trong; confidence: bí mật), ý là kiểu khi mình làm j đó, kể cho ai đó chuyện j đó in confidence là mình o muốn họ kể cho ai khác về vđề đó, If you tell something to someone in confidence, you do not want them to tellanyone else:

Any personal data you provide to us will be held in confidence.

Can I tell you something in confidence?
→ Tôi có thể nói với bạn điều này một cách riêng tư chứ? (ý là đừng nói ai khác)

❌ Ví dụ sai:

• ❌ I did it in confidence → Sai nếu bạn muốn nói “tôi làm điều đó một cách bí mật.”

✅ Nếu bạn muốn nói “làm gì đó một cách bí mật”, hãy dùng:

• secretly

• in secret

• behind closed doors

📌 Ví dụ:

• He secretly applied for another job.
  → Anh ấy nộp đơn xin việc khác một cách bí mật.

• They met in secret to discuss the plan.
  → Họ gặp nhau bí mật để bàn kế hoạch.

📍Tóm lại:

✅ “in confidence” → dùng khi chia sẻ thông tin bí mật với ai
❌ Không dùng “in confidence” để mô tả hành động làm bí mật – dùng secretly, in secret thay thế nhé.

• take someone into your confidence:

chia sẻ bí mật của bạn cho ai đó và tin rằng họ sẽ o bh nói cho ngkhac, to share your secrets with someone, trusting them not to tell other people:

2. Take someone into your confidence

🔹 Nghĩa: tâm sự, chia sẻ điều bí mật với ai đó vì tin tưởng họ sẽ không tiết lộ.

🔹 Tính trang trọng: cao hơn thông thường, thường thấy trong văn học, văn trang trọng.

🔹 Ví dụ:

• He took me into his confidence and told me about the situation at work.

• She regretted taking him into her confidence.

👉 Biểu cảm này thiên về văn viết hoặc storytelling, và cũng được dùng khi bạn muốn diễn đạt sự tin tưởng sâu sắc vào ai đó.

• tuyên bố; nchung là kiểu thông báo cgi đó 1 cách rõ ràng, chắc chắn, chính thức, to announce something clearly, firmly, publicly, or officially:

bị huỷ bỏ (chỉ dùng trong bối cảnh luật pháp như khi huỷ bỏ một luật lệ, thỏa thuận hoặc hôn nhân), to officially announce that something such as a law, agreement, or marriageno longer exists:

His second marriage was annulled because he never divorced his first wife.

dissolution (n)

sự giải tán tổ chức, hủy bỏ thoả thuận j đó, sự tan rã của cgi đó, hành động hoặc quá trình chấm dứt một tổ chức chính thức hoặc thỏa thuận pháp lý,the act or process of ending an officialorganization or legal agreement:

After the dissolution of communist rule in 1989, things began to open up.: Sau khi sự cai trị cộng sản tan rã vào năm 1989, mọi thứ bắt đầu mở ra.

   🧠 Nhớ đơn giản:

   “From scratch” = từ số 0, không có gì sẵn, tự tay/tự đầu óc mình làm nên

   Nó là idiom cực hay, vừa học thuật vừa gần gũi, cực hữu ích cho IELTS Speaking, Writing, giao tiếp, thuyết trình… đó nha!

rage (v)

Dưới đây là cách dùng cụ thể:

1. Nổi giận, tức giận, to speak very angrily to someone:

rage at He raged at (= spoke angrily to) us for forgetting to order a replacement.

• rage at/against/about somebody/something:

  diễn tả sự tức giận với ai đó hoặc điều gì đó. Ví dụ: "She raged at the waiter for forgetting her order" (Cô ấy nổi giận với người phục vụ vì đã quên món của cô ấy).

• rage (on):

  diễn tả sự giận dữ kéo dài. Ví dụ: "The argument raged on for hours" (Cuộc tranh cãi kéo dài hàng giờ).

• rage inwardly:

  diễn tả sự tức giận âm ỉ bên trong. Ví dụ: "He raged inwardly at her criticism" (Anh ấy tức giận âm ỉ trước lời chỉ trích của cô ấy).

• + speech:

  khiến người khác biết bạn đang tức giận. Ví dụ: " "This is outrageous!" she raged" ("Thật là quá đáng!" cô ấy nổi giận). 

2. (về bão, lửa, dịch bệnh,...) diễn ra dữ dội, bùng phát, to happen in a strong or violent way:

a fire rages The fire raged all night and into the next day.

• rage (on):

  diễn tả sự tiếp diễn của một sự việc dữ dội.

  Ví dụ:

  "The fire raged through the forest" (Ngọn lửa lan nhanh qua rừng).

  The argument rages on (= continues strongly).

• rage through/in something:

  diễn tả sự lan rộng của một sự việc dữ dội.

  Ví dụ:

  an epidemic rages A flu epidemic is raging in/through local schools.

  "A flu epidemic raged through the city" (Một trận dịch cúm bùng phát khắp thành phố).

  a storm rages The storm raged outside.

• rage out of control:

  diễn tả sự việc diễn ra mất kiểm soát. Ví dụ: "The fire was raging out of control" (Ngọn lửa đang lan ra ngoài tầm kiểm soát). 

Tóm lại, "rage" khi là động từ thường diễn tả sự giận dữ hoặc sự việc diễn ra dữ dội, bùng phát. 

rupture (n)

sự vỡ, cái dịp mà cgi đó nó nổ, vỡ hoặc là rách, an occasion when something explodes, breaks, or tears:

a rupture of the pipeline

figurative a rupture (= an end to a friendly relationship) between the families

một tình trạng bệnh lý trong đó thành cơ giữ dạ dày và ruột bên trong cơ thể bị vỡ ra, a medical condition in which the wall of muscle holding the stomach and bowels in place inside the body is broken apart:

You're going to give yourself a rupture if you lift that.
