an agreement drafted by the male passengers of the Mayflower promising to create a government that was loyal to the king. It was necessary because they had landed outside of their charter.

first permanent English colony in the new world, settled in 1607 in Virginia. It suffered tremendously due to a lack of food and the desire to find non-existent gold at all costs, but was saved by the discovery that tobacco grew well and could be sold as a cash crop.
