Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM)
A condition caused by a lack of calories or a lack of protein, leading to organ damage and potentially death.
Marasmus
A type of protein-energy malnutrition caused by a deficiency in calories, resulting in signs like a wasted appearance and delayed growth.
Kwashiorkor
A type of protein-energy malnutrition caused by a deficiency in protein, characterized by abdominal distention due to a lack of albumin.
Abdominal distention
Swelling of the abdomen often seen in kwashiorkor, resulting from fluid leaving the bloodstream.
Albumin
A protein that keeps fluid in the bloodstream; low levels are associated with kwashiorkor.
Hepatomegaly
Enlargement of the liver, often a symptom of kwashiorkor.
Edema
Swelling caused by fluid accumulation in tissues, commonly seen in kwashiorkor due to low albumin levels.
Hypotension
Low blood pressure, which can be a sign of malnutrition such as marasmus.
Bradycardia
Abnormally slow heart rate, a potential symptom of marasmus.
Delayed growth
Slower than normal physical development, which can occur with marasmus.
