Motherboard
The motherboard is a printed circuit board, that acts as a hub which other computer devices connect to. In addition to circuits, a motherboard has several sockets and slots to connect the other components.
RAM
Random Access Memory is an internal chip which stores data temporarily when running applications. The memory can be written to and read from, and is known as volatile memory.
ROM
Read Only Memory stores data permanently and data is not lost even when the power is turned off. This memory can only be read from and is known as non-volatile memory.
CPU
A Central Processing Unit is an electronic circuit board in a computer that executes instructions from a computer program.
There are 2 main components of a CPU:
Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) where all the arithmetic and logical operations are carried out.
Control Unit (CU) which takes instructions then decodes and executes them.
NIC
A Network Interface Card allows a device to connect to a network. It can be wired or wireless and has a unique MAC address code.
Graphics Card
It allows the computer to send graphical information to a video display device.
Graphic Cards are usually made of:
processing unit
memory unit (usually RAM)
cooling mechanism
connections to a display unit
Sound card
A sound card is an integrated circuit board that provides a computer the ability to produce sounds. They also allow a user to record sound from a microphone connected to a computer.
HDD/SSD
Hard Disk Drives and Solid State Drives main function is to store all the digital content.
SSD is replacing HDD.
