Connective Tissue (CT)
Tissue that binds, supports, and strengthens other body tissues, also a major transport system in the body.
Extracellular Matrix (ECM)
Composed of ground substance (GS) and protein fibres; it largely dictates the qualities of connective tissues.
Ground Substance (GS)
A component of the extracellular matrix made up of water, proteins, and polysaccharides.
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGS)
Long unbranched polysaccharides that play a crucial role in the structure of ground substance.
Collagen Fibres
Thick, strong fibres that provide tensile strength and are most abundant in the body.
Adipocytes
Fat cells that store energy in the form of triglycerides.
Fibroblasts
Cells widely distributed in connective tissues that secrete the components of the matrix.
Hyaluronic Acid
A non-sulphated GAG that helps bind cells together and maintains water retention.
Elastic Fibres
Fibres that provide stretch and recoil, found in structures like skin and blood vessels.
Marfan Syndrome
A hereditary condition affecting elastic fibers, resulting in various physical features and vascular complications.
Macrophages
Phagocytic cells in connective tissues that destroy bacteria and cell debris.
Osteoblasts
Bone-forming cells that lay down collagen and initiate the mineralization process.
Reticular Fibres
Thin, branching fibres that form networks in various tissues, providing structural support.
Chondroitin Sulfate
A GAG found in cartilage that provides support and elasticity.
Spongy Bone
Porous inner bone tissue that lies underneath compact bone and contains bone marrow.
