Epidermis
The superficial layer of the skin composed of epithelial tissue.
Dermis
The layer of skin underlying the epidermis, made of fibrous connective tissue.
Hypodermis
The subcutaneous layer beneath the skin primarily composed of adipose tissue.
Keratin
A fibrous protein forming the main structural constituent of hair, nails, and the outer layer of skin.
Melanocytes
Cells that produce melanin, which gives skin its color and protects against UV radiation.
Sebaceous Glands
Glands in the skin that secrete oil (sebum) to help prevent water loss and lubricate skin and hair.
Eccrine Sweat Glands
Sweat glands abundant on palms, soles, and forehead, important for thermoregulation.
Apocrine Sweat Glands
Sweat glands located in axillary and anogenital areas, secrete a thicker sweat that may contribute to body odor.
Friction Ridges
Epidermal ridges formed by the dermal papillae that enhance grip and contribute to fingerprints.
Cutaneous Sensations
Sensory perceptions that arise from receptors in the skin, responding to stimuli such as touch, pain, and temperature.
Homeostatic Imbalance
Alterations in skin color that can indicate underlying health issues.
Cyanosis
A bluish coloration of the skin due to low oxygenation of hemoglobin.
Erythema
Redness of the skin, often due to inflammation or infection.
Jaundice
A yellowing of the skin that may indicate liver dysfunction.
Nail Matrix
The tissue responsible for the growth of nails.
