It’s repetitive (he covers the same topic several times throughout his letters) and progressive (he builds on his points throughout the letters)

Protodocetism (Christ was a ghosty boy, no fleshy flesh)
Why did the false teaching of protodocetism probably spread in the church that John was addressing?
Cuz they argued that the flesh was bad, so why would Jesus inhabit bad?

Sin causes doubt about our assurance

Cuz if we say we’re without sin we’d be lying (the truth is not in us!)

It's helpfulness will eventually run out, and then the only think that tethers you to it is it’s truthfulness
