Hemostasis
The arrest of the escape of blood through natural or artificial means.
Coagulation
The process by which blood clots are formed to achieve hemostasis.
Estimated Blood Loss (EBL)
A measurement monitored during surgery to assess the patient's status and the need for transfusion.
Congenital hemostatic defects
Inherited conditions that affect the body's ability to form blood clots.
Mechanical Hemostasis
Achieved through devices such as hemostatic instruments, ligatures, and clamps to control bleeding.
Biological Hemostasis
Using biological agents like fibrin glue to control bleeding and approximate tissue edges.
Thermal Hemostasis
Obtaining hemostasis using heat-based methods during surgery, such as electrosurgery or lasers.
Chemical Hemostasis
Use of pharmacological agents to aid in stopping bleeding, including absorbable gelatin and thrombin.
Suture Material
Material used to close wounds, can be absorbable or nonabsorbable, single or multi-strand.
First intention healing
Wound healing that occurs under ideal conditions with primary union.
Second intention healing
Wound healing from the inside out when the wound is left open.
Third intention healing
Delayed primary closure where two granulated surfaces are approximated.
Inflammation
The body's protective response to injury, characterized by pain, heat, redness, and swelling.
Complications of wound healing
Potential issues arising from wound healing processes, including infection, hematoma, and dehiscence.
Surgical Wound Classification
Categorization of surgical wounds based on cleanliness and presence of infection.
Ligatures
Ties used to occlude vessels for hemorrhage control during surgical procedures.
Stapling Devices
Instruments used for closing tissues quickly, available in various types for different applications.
Mesh Reinforcement
Synthetic materials used to strengthen tissue and assist with healing in areas that cannot be sutured.
