Attitude
The tendency to think, feel, or act positively or negatively towards objects in our environment.
Explicit Attitudes
Attitudes that we can think about, report on, and consciously control.
Implicit Attitudes
Evaluations or inclinations towards positivity or negativity that we cannot consciously access or control.
Implicit Association Test (IAT)
A test used to measure implicit attitudes by assessing associations between concepts and evaluations.
Specificity vs. Generality
How attitudes vary in being broad versus targeted.
Accessibility
How quickly an attitude comes to mind.
Strength
The degree to which an attitude is firmly held.
Correspondence Principle
Attitudes predict behavior better when the attitude matches the behavior in specificity.
Cognitive Dissonance
The tension that occurs when behaviors are inconsistent with attitudes.
What is the relationship between explicit and implicit attitudes?
Explicit attitudes are consciously accessible and can be reported, while implicit attitudes operate unconsciously and can influence behavior without awareness.
How does the Correspondence Principle enhance attitude prediction?
The Correspondence Principle states that attitudes predict behavior more accurately when the specific attitude aligns with the specific behavior being measured.
What role does cognitive dissonance play in changing attitudes?
Cognitive dissonance creates tension when behaviors contradict attitudes, often resulting in attitude change to relieve the discomfort.
What is the Implicit Association Test (IAT) used for?
The IAT is used to measure implicit attitudes by evaluating the strength of associations between different concepts and evaluations.
How does accessibility affect the expression of attitudes?
Accessibility refers to how readily an attitude can be recalled from memory, influencing how likely it is to affect behavior in relevant situations.
