cleft lip and palate

congenital deformity in which the lip or the bones of the right and left maxilla fail to join in the center before birth

Scoliosis

an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine

Osteoporosis

loss of bone density that can result in an increased risk of fractures

Osteomalacia

abnormal softening of bones in adults

Rickets

a vitamin D deficiency in children, resulting in soft bones

open fracture (compound fracture)

bone fracture that breaks through the skin

closed fracture (simple)

break that does not penetrate the skin

axial skeleton

the part of the skeleton that includes the skull and spinal column and sternum and ribs

appendicular skeleton

bones of the shoulder, pelvis, and upper and lower extremities

Osgood-Schlatter

Anterior Tibial tubercle pain due to micro avulsions of growth plate on the tibial tubercle where the patellar tendon inserts

Osteoarthritis

a degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage covering the surface of bone becomes thinner and rougher

pathologic fracture

fracture caused by diseased or weakened bone

avulsion fracture

fragment of bone chipped away from the main bone

compression fracture

occurs when the bone is pressed together (compressed) on itself

Wedge Compression Fracture

fracture occurring anteriorly or laterally resulting in wedge shape of vertebrae, commonly found in thoracic spine, usually stable

crush compression fracture

fracture throughout the entire vertebra not just the front. Usually considered stable

Burst compression fracture

Fracture involves some loss of height in both the front and back of the vertebral body. Considered unstable and can result in neurologic injury to spine or spinal cord.

depressed fracture

broken bone portion is pressed inward, typical of skull fracture

segmental fracture

a piece of the shaft is separated by proximal and distal fracture lines

impacted fracture

broken bone ends are forced into each other
