What is a Reference Map?

What is an advantage of the Mercator projection?
It provides a grid of latitude and longitude lines, which aids navigation and reading maps.
What is a disadvantage of the Mercator projection?
It distorts size near the poles and distance between longitude lines increases toward the poles.
