Working Memory (WM)
A core ability affecting cognitive and social operations; critical for reasoning, learning, decision making, and understanding language.
Fluid Intelligence (Fluid IQ)
The capacity to quickly process new information, learn new things, and adapt to changing conditions; peaks in early adulthood.
Correlation (R)
A statistical measure of the relationship between two variables; in this context, it measures the relationship between WM and Fluid IQ.
IQ Testing
A method to assess intelligence, originated by Alfred Binet to identify children needing extra educational support.
Reliability
The consistency of a test; measured through test-retest reliability, indicating how stable the test results are over time.
Crystallized Intelligence (G_c)
Acquired knowledge and skills that continue to improve with age, such as vocabulary and general knowledge.
Fluid Intelligence (G_f)
The ability to process new information and adapt to new situations; tends to decline after the early 20s.
Dual N-Back Task
A cognitive training task aimed at improving working memory, involving tracking simultaneous visual and auditory information.
Dose-dependent response
The principle that the effect of a treatment or intervention increases with the amount of exposure or duration.
Training Transfer
The extent to which skills learned in one context apply to different contexts; recent studies question the transfer of WM training to Fluid IQ.
