1
New cards
Muscular contraction
Moves one bone at the joint to produce movement.
2
New cards
How much body weight do muscles make up?
Makes up 40 % of your total body weight.
3
New cards
How many Skeletal muscles are there in the human body?
There are approximately 650 Skeletal muscles in the human body.
4
New cards
How can muscles act?
Muscles can only act when it gets a signal from the nervous system.
5
New cards
What are three types of the muscle tissue?
These include the smooth muscle, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle.
6
New cards
Muscle atrophy
This is defined as a decrease in the mass of the muscle.
7
New cards
What are the three types of muscle contraction?
There are three types of muscle contraction, these are including Concentric contraction (shortening), Eccentric contraction (lengthening) and Isometric contraction (static)
8
New cards
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
These include the smooth muscle, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle.
9
New cards
Smooth muscle
• Long and spindle shaped
• It’s found in the walls of organs along with hollow cavities
• It serves to propel material along length of cavities. Some examples are urinary and respiratory systems.
• Involuntary. This means that they work without conscious control.
10
New cards
Cardiac muscle
• Heart muscle
• Involuntary (works without conscious control)
• More organized than smooth muscle
• It’s pseudo striated
• Avg heart rate is approx. 65 bpm
11
New cards
Skeletal muscle
• It’s also called striated
• It’s long cylindrical and striped up in appearance
• Makes up form of body, usually attaches to bone via tendons and cross a joint
• Muscular contraction moves one bone at the joint to produce movement
• Characterized by rapid, short term contraction of strength
•Underneath voluntary control
12
New cards
Muscle hypertrophy
involves an increase in size of skeletal muscle through a growth in size of its cells as an result of the increased demand or load placed on the muscle.
13
New cards
What happens to muscles when a load is placed on them?
Muscle can either shrink or grow depending on the load which is placed on the muscle.
14
New cards
What is the function of the muscle?
The function of the muscle is to attach to the bone, when the muscle is activated it contracts. When muscles contracts it brings the bones attached at each end to the muscle together. This is known as a muscular contraction.
15
New cards
What are some muscles that you are responsible for?
Tibialis Anterior

Obliques

Deltoids

Forearms

Gastrocnemius
16
New cards
voluntary muscle
These muscles are controlled by the nervous system.
17
New cards
In voluntary muscle
These muscles are not controlled by the nervous system.
18
New cards
Muscular contraction
When muscles contracts it brings the bones attached at each end to the muscle together.
19

Pectorals

Abdominals

Triceps

Gluteals

Quadriceps
