Structural Proteins
Support shape and organization of cells
Proteoglycans
Protein core with negatively charged sugars/carbohydrates attached. Called GAGs
Collagen
Provides strength to connective tissue within the ECM. Most abundant protein by weight in human body. A fibrulous protein
Fibroblasts
Main cell in the ECM, makes collagen in small units inside cell. Collagen then rearranges itself in the matrix.
Fibronectin
Helps hold ECM together, a type of structural protein. Also binds collagen to other cells, a type of glue in the ECM that has alot of binding sites
Laminin
Another glue type protein found in the ECM. Binding sites that helps attach proteins or cels together within the matrix
Elastin
Provides resistance and an elastic like texture for protection within the ECM. Why skin reacts when you pull on it. It is a stretchy molecule.
Hyaluronic Acid
Substrate that binds proteoglycans together
Integrins
A transmembrane protein found in the membrane of a cell. These proteins connect to things like collagen or fibronectin to hold stability within the matrix
Connective Tissue
Tissue that makes up the ECM
