DNA polymerase
An enzyme that synthesizes DNA by adding nucleotides in the 5' to 3' direction.
Semi-conservative replication
The process whereby each new DNA molecule consists of one old strand and one new strand.
Helicase
An enzyme that unwinds the DNA double helix during replication.
Single-strand binding proteins (SSBP)
Proteins that keep DNA strands apart during replication.
Topoisomerase
An enzyme that relieves supercoiling tension in DNA.
Primase
An enzyme that synthesizes RNA primers during DNA replication.
Lagging strand
The DNA strand that is synthesized in short fragments, away from the replication fork.
Okazaki fragments
Short DNA fragments synthesized on the lagging strand.
Ligase
An enzyme that seals gaps between DNA fragments by forming phosphodiester bonds.
Replication fork
A Y-shaped region where the DNA double helix separates for replication.
Proofreading ability
The ability of DNA polymerase to correct errors in DNA synthesis.
Replication bubble
A region where DNA strands are separated during replication.
Leading strand
The DNA strand that is synthesized continuously towards the replication fork.
