Analysis
in qualitative research, the process of identifying and labeling raw data (text) to find patterns, themes, concepts, and propositions
Analytical Memo
used in qualitative research to capture first impressions and reflections about the setting, people, and interactions; informal writing to distinguish the analysis from the data
Axial Coding
used in coding qualitative data after open coding, this coding pass links categories together in a meaningful way
Category
in qualitative research, a label for a set of excerpts, examples, or themes that are similar; may be drawn from the literature or emerge from the data
Constant-Comparative Method
an approach for coding qualitative data; the coding and categorizing process continues to change as the researcher analyzes the data and as additional data are collected
Credibility
the criterion used in qualitative research to assess the effectiveness and accuracy of the research design and findings drawn from its data
Emic
view that interprets data from the participant’s point of view in the context of in which the data are collected
Etic
view in which the participant’s talk or behavior is analyzed more conceptually without specific regard to context
Grounded Theory
an approach to analyzing qualitative data in which theory emerges from the data and the relationships among the emergent categories of data
Interpretation
in qualitative research, making sense of or giving meaning to the identified patterns, themes, concepts, and propositions
Memo Writing
in qualitative research, a writing process that serves as an intermediate step between coding and the first draft of the analysis; used as the basis for organizing the research project
Open Coding
the first and unrestrictive pass in coding qualitative data
Thematic Analysis
a method of qualitative analysis based on participants’ conceptions of actual communication episodes; a theme is identified based on recurrence, repetition, and forcefulness
Theme
a conceptualization of an interaction, relationship, or event drawn by the researcher from close reading and analysis of textual data
Theoretical Saturation
the point at which all data can be coded into a category; new categories are not emerging, and the existing category structure appears stable
Triangulation
use of several kinds of methods or data to further validate research outcomes and results
