Martin Luther

October 31 1517 he nailed his complaints, 95 theses (revolutionary opinions), onto the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. They criticized the Catholic Church, like the sale of indulgences, which was the church asking for payment for the forgiveness of sins. Thought Roman Catholic Church was corrupted. This marked an important starting point in the Protestant reformation.

Protestant Reformation

Big changes were happening that caused many reforms to occur. After Martin Luther called out the church, people started to shift away from Catholicism. This was an issue for art because majority of commissions/patrons were church members or churches themselves. Many were now censored, depending on what religion you now belonged to (Protestants, Calvinist’s, lutherists). Some artists got impacted a lot, some didn’t react.

Mannerism

“In the manner of.” Shift from perfect idealism to now very distorted figures and ideas. Art is a swinging pendulum. Starts in Florence but does shift to whole Italian peninsula. Lacks any balance and direct clarity in works.

Why is city of Venice different?

Often seen as the curious city. It is connected to east and west which draws a lot of influence from all types of people and cultures. They were also a major trade hub in Italy, the first city to get the artworks like prints, paints like oil, and the artists themselves.

There is no classical past because Venice didn’t exist, it was just canals and marshes. They built on top of these. But they did steal structures of roman classical pieces and put them on buildings.

Developed own style. Theatre and opera, carnivals celebrations. Culture of eroticism, Cortisones: women born into roles as physically seductive women, but also were well educated, wealthy, knew many languages, very well known high class individuals.
