How do neurones communicate?
Through synapses; the gaps between the ends of neurones
What are vesicles?
The vessel carrying the neurotransmitter to the presynaptic membrane
What are the 6 steps in a synapse?
MP1. Electrical signal flows down from the first axon
MP2. The electrical impulse reaches the end of the axon on the PRESYNAPTIC neurone
MP3. Electrical signal is converted into chemical signals called NEUROTRANSMITTERS
MP4. The neurotransmitters are released form the vesicles and diffuses across the synaptic cleft, DOWN THE CONCENTRATION GRADIENT
MP5. The neurotransmitters BIND WITH RECEPTORS on the postsynaptic membrane on the next neurone
MP6. The neurotransmitters are broken down or recycled to stop the second neurone continually sending signals
Why is it significant that the synapse is the only chemical part of the nervous system?
The only area where drugs can have an effect on the body
Why are synapses so important specifically?
Means that the signal only travels in one direction, esp. due to the concentration gradient
