What is human-centered computing, and what disciplines does it encompass?

Human-centered computing is a set of methodologies that apply to any field that uses computers in applications in which people directly interact with devices or systems that use computer technologies. It encompasses multiple disciplines including computer science, sociology, psychology, cognitive science, engineering, graphic design, and industrial design.

What are the main goals and scope of HCC?

HCC applications should integrate input from different types of sensors and communicate through a combination of media as output. Act according to the social and cultural context in which they are deployed. Be useful to diverse individuals in their daily life.

3
New cards

How does HCC differ from traditional human-computer interaction (HCI)?

Unlike HCI, HCC is not just about the interaction, the interface, or the design process. It is about knowledge, people, technology, and everything that ties them together. This includes how the technology is actually used and in what context.

What is an informatics degree, and how does it differ from a traditional computer science degree?

Informatics is a discipline that solves problems through the application of computing or computation, in the context of the domain of the problem. Computer science is focused on the design of hardware and software technology that provides computation, whereas Informatics focuses on the ever-expanding, ever present, and embedded relationship between information systems and the daily lives of people. ITI takes what CS does and creates programs to make interaction with interfaces/technology better and more “people oriented”.

5
New cards

Why has the field of informatics emerged, and what are its key characteristics?

The emergence of informatics is due to the need to be able to effectively manage and utilize information in a variety of domains, making it a vital field. It helps design new uses for information technology, and it takes into account the strategic, social, cultural, and organizational settings in which those solutions will be used.

6
New cards

How does informatics integrate with various domains and disciplines?

Informatics enables students to combine passions for both computation and another domain. An informatics program can embrace students and concentrations in art and design, history, linguistics, biology, sociology, statistics, and economics. Informatics provides a complementary path to reach other students for whom understanding and developing computation contextually is crucial to the problems that motivate them.

7

New cards

What is the name of the class?

Introduction to Information Technology & Informatics

9
New cards

What is the class about?

Understanding information technology and its application to individual, organizational, and societal scenarios, rather than on theoretical and mathematical underpinnings of computational techniques.
